Resourcing Vibrant & Healthy Churches In Pandemic Times
The Pandemic has changed how we do church and what it means to be relevant to the community.
The most keenly felt impact is the dissolution of our regular corporate gatherings which are focal point of our church life. Our connection is also challenged as not all welcome the pivot to an online experience. At the same time, many members are facing personal life challenges arising from employment, isolation and the sheer volume of information. All of these strike at the heart of our calling to reach out as we may not even have the capacity to consider how we can now conduct outreach and evangelism.
But in fact, there was a time in the history of the Church that much of what we experienced occurred: they could not hold large gathering sand many lost their livelihoods. That was when the church, was suffering, not from a Pandemic, but from Persecution.
On that day a great persecution broke out against the church at Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria… Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went. (Acts 8:1, 4)
This is, curiously, an “Acts 8-1,1-8 dynamic”: where the church, instead of being cowered or defeated, remained vibrant and resilient, and became an overcoming witness in times of struggle – as described in Acts 8:1, because of what had happened earlier in Acts 1:8-
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)
Now is the time when God’s church needs the power of the Holy Spirit to rise to be witnesses and be a beacon of hope.
Even through the Pandemic, the mission and calling of each church remains unchanged. Thus, these indicators of church-vibrancy hold true:
- A Process of engaging, shaping & discipling people: WATER (Win-Assimilate-Teach-Equip-Release)
- A People who are:
- Overcomers in mindset
- Engaged and anchored by a church-family,
- Committed to sustained community whether online or onsite,
- Able to sacrificially steward their Time, Talent and Treasure,
- Passionate to seek out ways to reach out to pre-believing loved ones through online or onsite means,
- Purposeful in their life-season and vocation
